Edward MacDowell is considered by many to be the first truly American composer. To a Wild Rose (originally for piano) is possibly his most well known composition. Also available is a set of four movements (including To a Wild Rose) arranged for wind quintet taken from MacDowell's Woodland Sketches (HSM4).

This new arrangement of Blaydon Races contains a simple trio for clarinet, horn and bassoon for the verse and a more decorative trio for flute, oboe and clarinet for the chorus. There then follows a virtuosic, and rather more contemporary take on the original folk song for the full quintet.
